Documentary - "Global Climate Strike in Hyderabad,India"| Raise your Voices| Fight Climate Injustice

On 25th September, 2020,  thousands of shoes a.k.a. toddlers, youth, children, tribals, farmers, parents and grandparents, came together to fight climate injustice in Hyderabad, India. 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘄? Do see the documentary. We had put forward 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 after consultation with city based renowned environmentalists and climate scientists. If there is a will, these demands are achievable in next 2 years i.e. by 2022, . 🇩‌🇪‌🇲‌🇦‌🇳‌🇩‌ 𝟭 -  𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗱 #ReviveCityOfLakes In 1970’s, Hyderabad was known as "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀". It has now turned into "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁". Debris, pharmaceutical waste, sewage water is rampantly being dumped into these beautiful heritage lakes leading to their extinction. Moreover, the FTL and buffer zone of these lakes is encroached by both land sharks and government civic authorities themselves, in the name of development. If this continues, we will lose these natural ecosystems that have multiple functions like preventing floods, serving as water reservoirs, replenishing underground water channels and providing a biodiversity that supports millions of species that are on the verge of extinction. 🇩‌🇪‌🇲‌🇦‌🇳‌🇩‌ 𝟮 - 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗡𝗼-𝗚𝗼 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀  #NoParksOnlyForests There are 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟬.𝟰% (𝟮.𝟴𝟭 𝘀𝗾. 𝗸𝗺) 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗱 that has a population of 68.1 lakh and spans over 650 square kilometres. Now to cover up for this gap, the Telangana Government has put up our dense forests for adoption by HNIs/Corporates under Green India Challenge. This move is most illogical as it gives the government “license to kill pristine forests that are biodiversity hot spots”. Converting forests to eco parks is literally reducing the green cover and their net carbon sequestering property, while making it seem to people that their lung spaces have increased. Isn't it, Green washing? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱? Why can't this challenge be used to revive barren or exploited lands in the city? Why can’t the streets be made lush by native tree canopies where people can do their morning and evening walks? This narrative by the Telangana Government is the same old story that has caused the destruction of our planet in the last 100 years. A recent movie by Sir David Attenborough titled “A Life on our Planet” highlights this exact nature of development that has caused the planet to deteriorate and brought it on the verge of collapsing. Forests and lakes belong to citizens and their future generations. Elected representatives are only caretakers and have absolutely no right to sell/or put them up for adoption, especially considering the fact that most of these are legally “Protected Areas”. However, if it’s beyond the government to fulfil their constitutional duty of protecting them then they need to hand them over to the surrounding communities with certain MOUs and terms and conditions in place which upholds the conservation of such ecosystems as that of foremost importance. If they do require funding, celebrities and Pharma companies can contribute to the corpus maintenance fund. This will also ensure transparency on how the money is being utilized.  Concrete structures being laid inside lakes and forests in the name of beautification and eco-parks will completely destroy these life-giving eco-systems and push Hyderabad into a worse climate crisis. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿! 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲. #GlobalClimateStrike #FightClimateInjustice
